ANALOG AFTERNOONS

WIth the discontinuation of beyond the bell we saw an opportunity to CONTINUE to bring arts and ENRICHMENT to TACOMA schools utilizing the talent of our local community.

We have heard from the students: they want more fun activities after school that are off screens. What if after school activities were mentally enriching and not just a daycare?

❋ Collaborative Energy

What would it feel like to create a space that was safe to explore your creative side and work together with other students in all grades to create a strong cross grade community?

❋ Expert Facilitation

Tacoma has a wonderful community of working artists who are interested in connecting with the younger generations and sharing their knowledge about their practices.

WE BELIEVE THIS UPLIFTS THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY

By employing local artists we ensure Tacoma has a strong arts community, in turn we support parents who need extra care after school but also want it to be educational and fun. This enriches the students and allows time to explore their inner minds, while also providing an opportunity to have high school students assist in the classrooms opening the door to their first work experience, income, and community connection.

THE DETAILS

  • We will offer classes 5 days a week from last bell to 5:30pm.

  • Classes will either be M/W/F or T/TH and will run for a one month duration.

  • $150month/student for the T/TH session. $225month/student for M/W/F session.

    This includes supplies, a local artist instructor, and an assistant.

  • All vetted instructors are sub contractors through Recess, will submit a volunteer form with each school, and pass a background check by the district.

  • We will open all classes for the year in August so parents can plan accordingly for the year ahead.

  • PTSAs can subsidize the tuition and/or provide scholarships for students.

  • The school provides a room with a sink and basic accommodations.

  • The students will be given an outdoor brain break during their class.

  • If we are able to register 5 schools for the program we will donate the full curriculum to a school in need.

  • We will host an annual silent art auction where all proceeds go to future scholarships.

WHY ANALOG? 〰️

Engaging with art, especially tactile, hands-on forms, can boost focus, lower stress, and increase feelings of connection and wellbeing.

It’s not hyperbole to say that when we work with our hands, something wakes up; something we desperately need to be well and live a meaningful life. A way to exercise not just our bodies, but our creativity. Because to be human is to be creative.

When we look to the future we recognize important qualities to instill in young minds are critical thinking, creative problem solving, and meaningful collaboration.

Creating art can shift the body out of "fight or flight" mode into "rest and digest".

Studies show that engaging in just 45 minutes of active art-making significantly reduces cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone.

Working with your hands to create something you enjoy stimulates the reward center of the brain, releasing dopamine. This builds motivation and gives you a natural, therapeutic mood boost.
